There is a lot of good conversation to have with this subject. Personally, I have setup and run dozens of free blogs. Many work surprisingly well. There are also lots of them that have restrictions so bad they are not worth your time trying to work with them. Many have surprisingly good security. Many are so poorly maintained that they are pretty well dysfunctional.

Free blogs are fine for simple hobby sites. If you want to post pictures or recipes or advice that can be viewed for free it's hard to beat. However, if you want to make any money with your blog. I recommend you use paid hosting. Here's why. Free blogs often look very good. You can use wordpress. You often have good software for the control panel, eg: Cpanel. All goes well until you start getting a volume of views. These free hosts can and will curtail and/or shut down your site if they feel the bandwidth you are using is more than average. This average number is highly debatable, but there is no appeal. If you are shut down for exceeding bandwidth on a free host, you are done. All that work has been wasted.

Not all paid hosting is created equal either. I recommend a host that has a completely scalable product. If your site is a runaway success it will be worth it to upgrade. However, if the Webhost you start out with does not accommodate upgrading bandwidth, and many of them don't. It could/will be a real problem to upgrade. You may get shut down for no other reason than success. You may have to change to a different web host that can accommodate a larger package. This can cause site downtime, problems setting the site back up. You may not easily be able to switch your theme. It can cost you reputation problems. Nobody wants any of that.

That is why I recommend Glowhost.com . They are the most accommodating web host I ever saw. You can up or down grade for very modest fees. Entry level pricing is as good as anywhere. You can shop around but if you read the TOS of potential web hosts you will have difficulty finding better. There are none in the top 10 recommended web hosts that pop up on a generic search. Sorry to say. They need to step up their game, but that is another post. Good luck. :)

I find these instructions very difficult. Surely there should be a screen snap to show the setup ? Do I put the files for my new domain into the "public_html" for the main site ? I am afraid to do so as that directory is already populated with files from the main domain. ! Why are there not two "public_html" directories ? One for the main site and another for the new domain ? Its all very unclear. Another thing that's not clear is this page of "comments". Having written the above there is no box or link saying 'submit'. ! Goodness knows how I do that ?

THANK YOU!! For the longest time ive been wondering where in the world did this distorted and to be honest completely wrong view of bandwidth come from? And where is throughput in all this. I even read one article on study dot com(i dont want the link to pop up as they seemingly dont deserve the traffic lol)where a man;who apparently has a Bachelor's in IT, says that bandwidth is the theoretical speed and throughput is the literally. Being that by definition bandwidth is a measure of distance between the highest and lowest frequencies that a medium can transmit forces me to call shenanigans on these so called tech experts. Kudos to you :)/post-script: who gets a Bachelors in just IT anyway without noting a focus, anyways PEACE OUT

Audience is unlikely because the program generating the visitor stats is not aware of things like gender or age. Location is more likely because an IP can be mapped to a geographic region. In AWStats if you look for "Locales" you will see where the visitors are coming from in a geographical sense.

I couldn't agree more. They took me in with 2 infected sites and had them cleaned out and pest free within 24 hours while my previous web host took a month "cleaning" my sites to no success and hence suspending my sites several times due to their frustration.

Yes, you are right. I meant to say to try to test a host by choosing a monthly plan, even though they cost more. Then after I like them I usually pay for 1 year, 2 year or sometimes 3 year plans if I really trust them. Thanks.
